Beyond Dreamings: The Rise of Indigenous Australian Art in the United States

  April 20, 2018 - July 7, 2019

Exhibition

In 1988, the exhibition Dreamings: The Art of Aboriginal Australia at the Asia Society in New York City catapulted Indigenous Australian art onto the world stage. Thirty years later, Beyond Dreamings explores the legacies of this important exhibition, revealing the ways in which Indigenous Australian artists have forged one of the most globally significant art movements of our time.

Curated by nine graduate students at UVA, Beyond Dreamings features key artworks from the original 1988 exhibition, alongside recent works that show the continuing diversity and dynamism of Indigenous Australian art.
