The Art in Life: Album Cover Design

In this iteration of the Art in Life webinar series, Kluge-Ruhe and The Fralin Museum of Art at UVA are exploring the art of music album covers. We’re featuring three expert voices on the topic: Ernie Cefalu has designed for rock legends such as the Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath and Aerosmith; Gerard Huerta’s work has graced covers for ACDC, Bob Dylan and Chicago; Joe Perez has designed for pop and rap icons like Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Janelle Monáe. How do album covers make the music sound even better? How do they impact our perception of the artists and their work? Join us in exploring these questions and more.

“There is no distinction for us between art and life,” said Yolngu Aboriginal Australian artist Wandjuk Marika. This proclamation draws attention to the arbitrary distinctions we often make in western cultures between “fine art” and “craft,” “design” and other often-unhelpful labels. As museums, we actively work to break down such distinctions. As museum professionals, we are aesthetically minded people who see art all around us. THE ART IN LIFE is a series of programs that explore the artistic creativity, innovation, challenges and aesthetic decisions of practices that usually aren’t considered fine art.
