AUSTALKS with Sonja Carmichael

The Embassy of Australia and the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia invite you to attend AUSTALKS with artist and senior Quandamooka weaver SONJA CARMICHAEL.

Drawing inspiration from the many stories connected to traditional Quandamooka weaving, Sonja Carmichael’s practice explores contemporary materials and techniques that directly respond to concerns about the preservation of the natural environment. An active member in her community, she is a leader in the regeneration of Quandamooka weaving, passing on cultural knowledge and skills through workshops, exhibitions, and field research.

Made with her daughter Elisa Jane Carmichael, Sonja’s works, Ungaire (freshwater reeds) (2023) and Quandamooka Gulayi (dillybag) (2023) are on permanent display at the Embassy of Australia.

RSVP is essential. Photo ID is required for entry. Parking is not available at the embassy.
